Tangier

Morocco’s northern port city on the Strait of Gibraltar — 14km from Spain, a medina with Phoenician foundations, and the Cap Spartel lighthouse at the meeting of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

Tangier sits at the northwestern tip of Africa, 14 kilometres across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain. It has been a port city since Phoenician settlement in the 5th century BC, passed through Carthaginian, Roman, Vandal, Byzantine, Arab, Portuguese, Spanish and British hands before Morocco consolidated control in 1956, and operated as an International Zone under joint European administration from 1923 to 1956. That last period gave the city its reputation as a place outside ordinary national jurisdiction — and attracted a generation of expatriate writers, artists and figures who would have been unwelcome or illegal elsewhere: Paul Bowles, William S. Burroughs, Jack Kerouac and Tennessee Williams all spent significant time here.

The medina occupies the hill above the port, anchored by the Grand Socco (Place du 9 Avril) at its entrance and the Petit Socco inside the walls. The kasbah at the highest point of the medina holds the Sultan’s Palace, now the Museum of Moroccan Arts, with views across the strait to Spain on clear days. The American Legation Museum, a short walk from the Petit Socco, occupies the building where the United States established its first overseas diplomatic mission in 1821 — Morocco was the first country to recognise American independence in 1777. Cap Spartel, 14 kilometres west of the city, is the northwestern tip of mainland Africa and the point where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean; the 1864 lighthouse is still operational.

Tangier is a transit city for many visitors — the ferry crossing from Tarifa in Spain takes 35 minutes, and Tangier Med port, 40 kilometres east, is the busiest port in Africa. Those who stay benefit from a medina that is less tourist-facing than Marrakech’s and a city that operates as a functioning port and commercial centre rather than a heritage attraction. As a Muslim-majority city, halal food is the default. Tangier is best visited April to June or September to October; the Atlantic climate keeps it moderate, though winter can be rainy and the strait produces strong winds year-round.
