Busan

South Korea's second city — port, beach, and mountains in one place

Busan is South Korea's second-largest city and its main port, and it has a character that Seoul — for all its energy — doesn't quite replicate. The city is built around hills, coastline, and a working harbour, which gives it a texture and variety that rewards the extra effort of getting here. Haeundae Beach is the country's most famous stretch of sand and in summer it earns the title; Gwangalli Beach, a short distance away, has the same water with a better view of the Gwangan Bridge and a calmer atmosphere. Gamcheon Culture Village stacks pastel-coloured houses up a hillside above the port in a way that has become one of Korea's most photographed scenes — and unlike some famous viewpoints, it still has a functioning neighbourhood behind the aesthetic.

The food in Busan is the reason many Koreans say it's the best city to eat in the country. Jagalchi Fish Market — the largest seafood market in Korea — opens early and runs all day, with raw fish restaurants on the upper floors where you can eat what you've just bought from the stalls below. Gukje Market covers everything else: street food, produce, clothing, hardware. Halal options in Busan are more limited than in Seoul but a small number of certified restaurants operate near Seomyeon and Haeundae; the situation is improving as international visitor numbers rise.

Busan is two and a half hours from Seoul by KTX high-speed train, which makes it viable as a two-night stop on a broader Korea itinerary or as a standalone three to four day trip. The city also hosts the Busan International Film Festival each October — the most significant film event in Asia — which brings a different kind of energy to the already lively Haeundae district. For travellers who find Seoul overwhelming, Busan offers the same modernity at a scale that feels more manageable.
